Pascal changes a lot,from a dependent, little brother to a more analytical, thinking person. He saves Gideon when he falls through the old broken down bridge. He saves Gideon when he is in an argument with a man(white). Pascal is very intelligent and asks Michael and Judith to stay nearby the Green Gloryland, so that other people suspect whites  are owners of the farm. Therefoere, the night riders who tried to threaten the free slaves farms, go on by, because they are tricked into believing it's owned by whites, which is Pascal's trick.
