Language is very different in the Party than how we know it to be. We use language for expression, but in the Party, the idea is limit the scope of language and therefore expression. The Party wants to ultimately monitor and control thought. This is virtually impossible with a wide use of vocabulary. By limiting the range of expression they can ultimately limit the range of thought. The final product, which with each edition of the dictionary they are destroying scads of words, is meant to limit the range of thought so that there is virtually no need for thought police anymore either because thought will be so limited the Party will know what everyone is thinking at any given moment.
