The glucose meter is ok to use for a short while - say a couple of months during pregnancy-caused diabetes which is temporary, but punching the tip of each finger a few times a day gets quite annoying as the fingertips get quite sore. The meter is very small, compact and handy though and gives a fast easy-to-read count.
The most common type of diabetes is type 2 diabetes. Prevention is imperative if you are at an increased risk in terms of being overweight or you have a family history of the disease. Steps to prevention are becoming more physically fit in terms of lifestyle choices including exercise. Eat more fiber and whole grains. Lose weight not through going on fad diets, but through a healthy lifestyle change of eating healthy foods and incorporating the above mentioned changes.
Measuring blood sugar in itself does not prevent diabetes. It does however allow you to monitor your levels and determine what needs to be done to control your blood glucose levels. The posts above give good information on what to do to help control those levels.
Measuring blood sugar does nothing to prevent diabetes. It only tells you your current level; if the level tells you there is a problem, you can do some of the things in post #2 to help alleviate your symptoms. It is important to note that we are taling about type II diabetes, here. It is strongly affected by good and bad lifestyle choices. One of the main things the changes mentioned in post 2 do is to keep body weight normal. This is a huge problem in the US right now--an incredible number of Americans are overweight and obese!
Type I diabetes is more severe. The pancreas has stopped producing enough or any insulin, and the person must inject him/herself with insulin in order to survive.
Can measuring blood sugar prevent diabetes?
Measuring blood sugar is only one of many things that can be done to prevent diabetes. All it does is tell you the effects of what you're eating. What can really prevent diabetes is a lifestyle change.
The basic factors to preventing diabetes are: cut out the bad sugars and refined foods; reduce fat intake; eat more fresh fruits and vegetables; avoid white flour bread, white rice, and pastas; NO soda pop and sugary juice drinks; drink more water (standard rule is 1 qt./50 lbs. of body weight); and EXERCISE.
If you change your diet, get up off the couch and out of that easy chair and be more active, you'll be surprised how your blood sugar naturally responds. Many people have brought their diabetes under control and even totally eliminated it by a lifestyle change!
