I think you may be referring to Phil Lynott. In the mid 60s he began singing in the band the Black Eagles. He is best known for playing with the band Thin Lizzy.  Thin Lizzy was an Irish hard rock band formed in Dublin, Ireland in 1969. The band was originally led by bassist, songwriter, and singer Phil Lynott. They are best known for their song "Whiskey in the Jar", "Jailbreak" and "The Boys are Back in Town." He had several albums:

  1. Solo in Soho
  2. The Phillip Lynott Album
  3. Live in Sweden 1983

In his last years he suffered from drug and alcohol dependency.  On Christmas night 1985 he collapsed and was driven to the hospital where he was diagnosed as having a kidney and liver infection. On January 4 1986 he died of pneumonia and heart failure.  He was 36 years old.
