Edgar Allan Poe had a hard life filled with tragedy and suffering. A brilliant writer, he introduced the world to a new form of literature, the short story.
Losing his mother at age 2, he had lost his father the year before. He was fortunate to be taken in by the wealthy Allan family. Even though he went to fine schools, Edgar developed a gambling habit which angered and distanced his foster father, John Allan, who refused to help him settle his debts.
He entered West Point Academy, hoping to impress John Allan, however, he was not successful at this either, he was dismissed for neglecting his military responsibilities.
Writing during this period, his work was well received by critics, but it did not make him a sufficient living. He married his 13 year old cousin, which caused people to question his sanity.
Throughout his life, Poe was accused of being a drunk, a gambler, unstable in his choices, but his life was marked by loss of the women he loved. Mrs. Allan died when Edgar was 20, his first wife died in 1847.
After Virginia's death he turned to alcohol more often and his behavior became erratic. No matter what choices he made, Edgar Allan Poe continues to thrill readers with his insight into the human psyche, he has the power to frighten us, with his expression of the dark side of human nature.
