Biff Loman is the catalyst and protagonist of the play, who influences his father's behavior and experiences a dramatic inner change by the end of the play. Much of Willy Loman's grief and anguish stems from the fact that Biff is an unsuccessful man in his mid-thirties, which drives Willy crazy and forces him to continually live in the past. Biff's character development is illustrated through Willy's flashbacks, where the audience learns that Biff was never chastised for his bad behavior or given solid advice as a child. Biff discovering his father's infidelity also plays a significant role in his relationship with Willy throughout the novel and is the reason he did not enroll in summer school to make up for failing math.

As the play progresses, Biff comes to a staggering realization after meeting with his old boss, Mr. Oliver. Biff discovers that his entire family has been living a lie and is delusional. Biff's self-realization demonstrates his dramatic inner change, and he attempts to...
