Dirt and solids can be removed by passing the air through a HEPA filter. Carbon dioxide is commonly removed from an air sample one of two ways. You can pass the air across a scrubber in the form of a bed of activated charcoal, or you can bubble the air through a strong base such as potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, or lithium hydroxide. Either of these methods will effectively remove the carbon dioxide. The international space station uses a lithium hydroxide system for this purpose.
Water vapor can be removed by passing the air stream across a dessicant, a material which has a high affinity for water (for example silica), or it can be removed by chilling the air stream and causing the water to condense and freeze onto a chilled surface. The latter method is more common in industrial applications.
