Taylor develops a plan in conjunction with Mattie whereby she drives Estevan and Esperanza to sanctuary on a Reservation in Oklahoma. This plan serves two goals. One, it gives Estevan and Esperanza safety and, two, it allows Taylor to search for Turtle's biological parents.

Turtle's parents are not found, but Estevan and Esperanza disguise themselves as Turtle's parents, assuming the identities of the fictitious Steven and Hope Two Two. Impersonating the Two Twos, Estevan and Esperanza go to a lawyer, Mr. Jonas Wilford Armistead, who draws up legal adoption papers that they sign naming Taylor as Turtle's adopting parent.
