Jing-mei's mother, Suyuan, emigrated to San Francisco in 1949 after having lost everything at home in China: her parents, her house, her husband, and her twin daughters. "But she never looked back with regret. Things could get better in so many ways." Suyuan moved forward because she had to. Because of her mother's background in China, and her belief that, in America, a person can be anything they want, Suyuan's cultural experiences seem to drive her to push Jing-mei hard to be her very best and to be a genius at something, at anything.
