In The Great Gatsby, the titular character is corrupted by money, as his fervent desire to become wealthy and win Daisy back results in him resorting to illegal activity and bootlegging to make his fortune. Daisy is also corrupted by money. She is accustomed to living a life of luxury and values money above all else, including love. She rejects Gatsby and chooses to remain with her unfaithful husband, Tom, whose wealth is guaranteed.
