First, photosynthesis is the process of converting energy from sunlight into glucose from carbon dioxide and water, and oxygen.  That glucose is then converted into pyruvate.   During cellular respiration the pyruvate releases adenosine triphosphate.

Oxygen is produced by photosynthesis, and carbon dioxide is produced by internal respiration.  One of the two processes will likely be occurring at a faster rate depending on the light - lots of let means CO2 in and O2 out, and little light beans CO2 out and O2.

When measuring the rate of photosynthesis using an oxygen sensor, the concentration of oxygen released in to the air is measured.  The higher the rate, the higher the concentration of oxygen released into the air.  The more oxygen in the air, the higher the light intensity was that fed the process of photosynthesis.

Like an oxygen sensor, a carbon dioxide sensor measures the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air.  Because this value is negative it means that C02 was being absorbed, and not produced so the light intensity was sufficient to trigger photosynthesis.
