There are several tracts that can be taken here.  I think that much of it is going to depend on the resources that you have and with what you feel comfortable assessing.  I would spend time on two specific areas.  The first would be the growth of colonialism and slavery as a joint realities of the modern Western world.  At a time when Western Europe was enjoying unprecedented modernization with the expansion of borders, new goods and value being injected into European economies of scale, the presence of slavery was a vital part of this process.  It was slavery that allowed much of the wealth of the West to be expanded and to be developed upon throughout the time period.  For Africans, slavery meant certain death or indescribable pain and suffering.  For White Europeans, slavery meant profit and an endless source of income.  Investigating this link can help with the idea of modernization in the Atlantic world and the proliferation of slavery.  I would also study the emergence of the cotton gin in the American South and how this increased cotton production, increasing the need for more slaves, which in turn increased cotton production.  I think that being able to investigate this cycle is another example of how slavery increased in the modernized setting, only this time in America, as opposed to Europe.
