Sadly, Enzo doesn't have good memories about his mother. She hadn't seemed at all concerned about her puppies' welfare when she was alive. Enzo relates that his mother was actually fairly indifferent to him and his siblings. He surmises that his mother found her responsibilities to her puppies overwhelming, because she "seemed relieved" whenever one of them was adopted into a family.

Enzo believes that each time a sibling left his mother's care, she was relieved that there would be one "fewer yipping mammal tracking her down to bleed her of her milk."
