You might consider how the mortgage crisis affects everyday people.  You probably know someone who has been effected.  Interview a friend or family member who has lost his or her house, or is afraid to.  Sometimes that's the best way to get an idea.  Then research it.

I would argue whether or not the government should bail out people who got into mortgages they couldn't afford. One argument in favor of the bailouts is that if the government doesn't help these people, the vacant houses will become magnets for criminal activity and will drive down the property values of those who stay in the neighborhood. An argument against it is that it seems to reward bad decision-making and is using the tax dollars of those who bought homes that they could afford to subsidize those who gambled and lost.

I have no idea what your professor wants you to write on, but suppose you look at where/why the mortgage crisis came from/started.  I know one point of view that would be interesting to research.  You might look into changes in law/policy during the Clinton administration that changed the rules so that "everyone" could get a home, regardless of their ability to pay.

Your thesis sentences might look something like this:

The mortgage crisis of 2008 was caused by many converging factors, [SUBJECT] but the principal one was changes made during President Clinton's second term that attempted to make mortgages available to many people, some of whom had little hope of making the payments [ATTITUDE].

You can pick the cause of your choice if you don't like this one, but make sure it's something you can research in two days. You might want to look into fraudulent lending practices or the change in attitude toward a house from a place to life to a place to make money from.

Good luck!
