The most apparent disparity or difference between both stories is their focus. I am not sure that Tagore means to compose something that depicts the plight of women in India. Pande does. Tagore is more interested in creating an aesthetic story that might have applications in a social context, but this is not its primary purpose. Ratan is not a symbol for women as much as she is a symbol for the abandonment and neglect that all human beings, to an extent, endure. Pande is pretty direct about the fact that her story is about the condition of women in India and seeks to broaden her story to a larger social context of the predicament of women. The fact that one speaks to a larger social condition and one speaks to a more transcendent condition in human beings represents where a disparity exists between the two. This does not make one better or superior to the other work, but rather helps to bring about a point of comparison in how one is to understand one work over another. It is in this where I think that a fundamental difference or disparity emerges in both.
