Consider that the entire song is an extended metaphor where the speaker is comparing life to an unwritten book.  In this metaphor, she uses several others:

the blank page before you
the dirty window
the words you cannot find
something in the distance
the rain
drench yourself in words unspoken

It seems each of the above lines/images are also intended to be metaphors for something else.  You could fill in the blank for the deeper meanings they might hold (which could be fun).
