Any prop ideas for my research project on roller coasters????

Hi!
I'm doing a class and we have to do a 10 page long research project. We have to come up with props. I'm doing mine on roller coaster safety and covering the following items:
Parts, Types, history,
Aerodynamics, energy, Velocity, G forces, etc
Natural occurrences and recuperation - safety measures etc.
It can be anything.
Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you have quite a project to do!

One thing that is important about roller coasters is that the old-fashioned ones really were "coasters" in that the cars were not powered. Usually the cars were pulled up the first (and highest) hill by a chain mechanism, and then they just rolled because of theirĀ  momentum for the rest of the ride. People sometimes don't realize this, because the cars do go uphill several times during the ride, but each hill must be shorter than the previous one.

You might consider building a marble roller coaster to demonstrate this. I have had students make track out of closed-cell foam pipe insulation, which is not very expensive and is available at most building supply stores. It looks like this:

You can split this tubing the long way and have lengths of flexible U-shaped track to run a marble down. If your starting hill is tall enough, you can even include a loop-the-loop without having the marble fall out.
