The poem 'A Birthday' by Christina Georgina Rossetti is a simple hearfelt verse about the love of her life - this, it is obvious from the way she writes, is someone who is the light of her life. She fills the poem with metaphors and similes of beauty and imagery from Nature. All her images are romantic and endearing, such as doves, appes, pomegranates and rainbows and many are images from classical literature such as would have been painted on the Greek urn so beloved of Keats.
But beautiful as all these are, none compares to the only birthday present she really wants - the return of her love to her - because that is her real birthday - the day her life began for real :
Work it in gold and silver grapes,
In leaves and silver fleurs-de-lys;
Because the birthday of my life
Is come, my love is come to me.
