The average speed of a movement is defined as the distance traveled divided by the time spent in travel this distance. The average speed is independent of the type of motion that has been done in the interval of time that is considered.

This athlete can run at an average speed of 9 kilometers per hour. We will calculate this same speed in kilometers per minute. To perform this calculation, we will convert the one hour time interval in minutes and then divide the value of speed between this result:

1 hour = 60 minutes

Then the speed in kilometers per minutes will be:

v = 9 km/(60 minutes)

v = 0.15 km/minutes

Considering that the athlete moves with speed constant then, in 30 minutes, he can travel a distance of:

d = v*t = (0.15)(30)

v = 4.5 km
