Mark Twain is considered one of the finest writers America has produced.  His novel, "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" is based on his own childhood in Hannibal, Missouri. Twain wrote about everything he observed and in many different kinds of writing.  He wrote jokes, travel books, novels and essays of criticism for whatever he felt was lacking. He tackled topics many people would not such as racism as seen in Huckleberry Finn, society manners and behavior which he often made fun of, and of course, the politics of the time.  I would think that if you researched Mark Twain himself and his influence on American and European writers and readers, and use "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" as  a base for looking at the idyllic  American childhood in general, you should be able to find what You want to research.
