Write a three- to four-page (600-800 word) paper on a topic of your choice related to language and culture. Using the Web or the ProQuest Online Library, find an article about the differences in the way language is used in different cultures or the ways in which the language reflects the culture and its worldview. Summarize the information in the article you have chosen and evaluate the use of language in that culture, using concepts we have studied in this class. Make sure to follow the guidelines in the approved style guide for citing references appropriately in the text and in the Reference List at the end of the paper.
I wonder if you are using combinations of keywords in your search efforts. Using just "language" or just "culture" will produce too many results for you, and you will not be able to search through all the articles. Most academic databases have search engines much like Google's, based on what is called Boolean logic. That means that you can limit and narrow your search by using two search terms and the word "AND" in between. Google does this automatically, but some databases do not.
Another way to approach this might be to choose a particular culture as a search term in combination with "language" and "culture." For example, you might explore language and African-American culture, language and Latino culture, or language and Creole culture. In each of these cultures, language is rich, varied, and is likely to be the focus of academic discussion.
Be sure as you do your research to look at abstracts first, instead of trying to read entire articles. The abstracts are there to capture the essence of the articles, and they can save you a great deal of time.
One person who has some very interesting things to say about language and culture is Richard Rodriguez. I have provided a link to an interview with him.
