I use the above listed site in my government class all the time.  Another site which has very helpful information on this issue is Amnesty International.  Be aware that it is a biased site, in that it is trying to convince more and more people to support abolishing the death penalty, but that doesn't mean the factual information you find there won't be helpful.

Specifically, they list all executions, including pending ones, have a comparison of state by state information and laws regarding the death penalty, compare the use of capital punishment by state and offer some case by case evidence.

Here is a good site that has some information about the death penalty in each state.  You can find out whether each state allows the death penalty.  You can find out how many people they have executed since 1976.  You can find out how many people they have on death row (you can also find out how many of those people are women).  You can also find out what the murder rate is in each state.

So, I would think that would give you just about all of the information you would need in order to do your project.
