Of course your thesis would depend upon your point of view. If you consider it harmful for little girls to participate in them, then you might start off with a statement like "Jon Benet Ramsey would be alive today if her mother hadn't tried to make her a beauty queen when she was only six years old." Or: "Every year millions of girls compete in beauty pageants all over America, and most of them are in for heartbreak when they fail to win." But maybe you don't think they are harmful to little girls. (You say "children," but I think only girls participate in these beauty pageants. I would drop the word "children" if I were you.) You don't have to write your thesis statement first. It comes first in your paper, but it doesn't have to be written first. If you do some research and find some good arguments, that should give you a much better idea of what you want to say in your thesis, as well as in your conclusion. Don't get too bogged down with research. You own opinion is what's important, but you need to support it with facts. If you find one good magazine article in a magazine likeParents, the author of that piece should refer you to other sources. It sounds like a very interesting topic for a term paper.
