Let the two numbers be 'x' & 'y'

Now, as per the question

y = 4x ............(1)

Also, x+y = 85......(2)

Using the value of y from (1) in (2) we get

x + 4x = 85

or, 5x = 85

or, x = 17

Thus, y = 4x = 4*17 = 68

Hence the two numbers x & y are 17,68

Since the larger is 4 times the smaller number, we assume x is smaller and 4x is larger number. Since their sum is 85, we have the equation,  x+4x = 85.

So 5x =85

5x/5 =85/5 =17

So x= 17 and 4x = 1*17 = 68

17 and 68 are the numbers.
