Tom's fantasy characters range from Robin Hood to Indian chiefs in Mark Twain's enduring novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, but after his fight with prospective girlfriend, Becky Thatcher, his thoughts turn to piracy. His bad day gets even worse when he discovers that his brass doorknob has been returned by Becky, so Tom decides to take to the river with his pals Huck Finn and Joe Harper. They all determine to become pirates and even develop their own persona as they spend several days on nearby Jackson Island.
Although Tom never really plans very far ahead, his disappearance and suspected drowning serves to make everyone who knows him--including Becky--that much happier to see him when the boys return to celebrate their own funerals.
