In aerobic respiration and anerobic respiration, how do reactants get in?
The reactants in aerobic respiration include oxygen and glucose. Oxygen enters the cell by diffusion. It is first transported to the cells via the red corpuscles. These contain hemoglobin, a transporter protein that carries oxygen to the cells of the body. Due to a difference in concentration outside versus inside the cell, oxygen will diffuse across the membrane of the cell. Glucose enters the same way--by diffusion. But, this is called facilitated diffusion. The products that form are ATP plus the wastes carbon dioxide and water vapor. In anaerobic respiration, such as in yeast or bacteria, the glucose diffuses into the cells. Here, in the absence of oxygen, the cells can ferment the sugar and produce carbon dioxide and alcohol as waste products(in yeast) or lactic acid(in bacteria) as well as ATP.
