There are a number of individuals who are actively involved in the struggle to gain and maintain their power and authority. To some extent some of these individuals came to the realization that the entire judicial process was a sham and the girls were simply acting. Statements of fact brought before the court by Giles, Proctor and Francis unearthed the underlying issues which posed a risk to the integrity of the court and its officials.
The Judge (Hathorne) and the Deputy Governor (Danforth) sensed the deception by the girls but they were unable to admit this realization because it placed their reputations at risk. In effect, they decided to work to protect their reputation by wrongfully convicting the innocent people “DANFORTH: No, no, I accept no deposition. Tell me, Mister Proctor, have you given out this story in the village?”.
Parris also found himself in a similar situation because the individuals spearheading the witch-hunt included his daughter and his niece. Failure of the proceedings posed a risk to his reputation and his ability as the community’s religious leader.
On the other hand, Putnam, a wealthy individual, took the opportunity to use one of the girls against George, so he could acquire his land “COREY: Thomas Putnam is reachin‘ out for land!”.
