The best time to cry is at night, according to Steve. Crying in prison is not safe.
In his journal at the beginning of the book, Steve says the best time to cry is at night when someone else is being beaten up.
That way even if you sniffle a little they won’t hear you. If anybody knows that you are crying, they’ll start talking about it and soon it will be your turn to get beat up when the lights go out. (p. 1)
In jail, you can’t show weakness. Steve finds it hard to believe where he is. When he looks in the mirror, it does not seem to be him. He is “scared all the time.” His life was turned around by “a few events” that caused him to spend the rest of his life behind bars.
