The qualities of a woman are reason, caution, and a sense of preservation.
Kino depends on his wife Juana to be the cool-headed one. In the Song of the Family, she is the main note. While Kino has problems with anger, Juana knows what to do. When the scorpion stings Coyotito, Juana is the one who acts quickly. With a cool head, she sucks the poison from the wound. Kino, on the other hand, can only grind the insect to dust.
Sometimes the quality of woman, the reason, the caution, the sense of preservation, could cut through Kino's manness and save them all. (Ch. 5)
Although she credits her ability to her womanness, Juana clearly possesses intelligence and a cool head. These are two things Kino seems to lack. Kino depends on Juana to keep them afloat. If the doctor had not interfered, she would have saved Coyotito’s life. Her strength is her ability to keep their family together in the worst situations. Kino's "manness" might very well destroy them if she was not there to act when he can't, and make up for the poor choices he makes. She does appreciate what he does do for the family, and still loves and admires him.
