How does Brett’s revelation about San Sebastian affect Jake in Chapter 9 of The Sun Also Rises?
Why had she gone? What does this tell about Brett? How does this drive a deeper wedge between Robert and Jake?
I highly recommend you read the conversation between Jake and Brett in the middle of this chapter. There, you will find the answers to your deeper questions.
Brett asks Jake if Robert is going on the fishing trip with them and when he replies that he is, Brett asks if this might not make Robert a bit uncomfortable. Jake does not understand why she would say this, but she later reveals it is because she had just spent quite a bit of time with Robert in San Sebastian and although he was nice for awhile, she eventually found him to be dull.
Based on what you know of Brett, what do YOU think this tells about her? Keep in mind the other men with whom she has been with, and keep in mind that she and Jake love each other. So, she goes and spends time with Robert Cohn -- and with Brett, this means that she sleeps with him. When she makes the comment, "He gets a little dull" - what do you think that says about the kind of woman Brett is?
Read Jake's reply. When she tells him she was with Robert, he says "Congratulations." What kind of comment do you think that is? Funny? Kind? Sarcastic? Based on what you know of Jake, you can tell that he is none too pleased by Brett's revelation. If you read the rest of their conversation, you can figure out how this is going to drive a deeper wedge between Robert and Jake. In the next chapters, you can see how this plays out by the way Jake treats Robert.
