Consider most of the characters in the story. At the beginning of the book, they are the product of the British school system - uniforms somewhat the worse for wear after the crash but still representative of their background, willing to accept and searching to reestablish the discipline to which they were accustomed, using the democratic procedures of their past to create a leaders while they needed to take care of themselves.

As time went by, however, circumstances changed on the island. Ralph was no longer recognized as being the leader when being tall and physically attractive and friendly toward everyone ceased to be important in the eyes of the others. Jack adapted more quickly to the new needs of life on the island, learning to overcome past ideas of proper behavior in order to hunt and kill the pig. Piggy was physically unable to escape the realities of his asthma, his obesity, and his analytical pattern of thought that couldn't change to cope with the island environment.
