Gases and liquids do have different properties, but they are more similar to each other than they are to solids. Both liquids and gasses "flow." That gives them the ability to easily change shape and assume the shape of the container that they occupy.
The passive transport mechanism of diffusion also works with liquids and gases. They each will attempt to reach a state of equilibrium, when there is a concentration difference present.
One definite difference between liquids and gases though is their ability (or inability) to be compressed. Gases can be compressed down to occupy smaller spaces, but liquids cannot be compressed. That is the leading reason of why liquids are used in hydraulics.
