It is difficult to break a novel down into just five important events, but here are the ones that I consider to be the top five.

The first significant event is when Stopthief is befriended by Uri, who proceeds to protect him and help him clean up his appearance with new clothes, a bath, and a trip to the barbershop.

Secondly, the city is taken over by the "Jackboots", who initially impress Stopthief with the shininess of their boots and their well-kept appearance. It does not initially dawn on Stopthief that Jews are being persecuted by these men.

Thirdly, Uri invents a life story for Stopthief, which gives the young boy a new sense of identity. According to his new "character", he was born in Russia and later travelled with his family to Warsaw before the rest of his family was killed by Jackboots. His name is now Misha.

Fourth, Misha joins his friend Janina and her family (for whom he has been providing stolen food) in a march to the ghetto, in which he later gets confined as well.
