PEMDAS (please excuse my dear aunt Sally) P is for parenthesis, so you will start there first. It is easier to change the 1/2 to a decimal, which =.5  Next you will multiply the 45 by 1/2, which =  .5 and you should get 22.5.

Next, you will multiply -40 by 22.5. Anytime a number is right next to the parenthesis -40(22.5) it means to multiply. Once you multiply, you should get -900. The number will stay negative, because you are multiplying it by a positive number.

The answer is -900. Simply multiply 22.4 ( .5 x 35) by -40 to get the answer. You can remember this by the acronym PEMDAS. This is the order in which you do the problem (also known as "order of operations) P=Parenthesis E=Exponents M=Multiplication D=Division A=Addition S=Subtraction So, you do whatever is in the parenthesis first, take care of the exponents second, then do the multiplication and so on.

A lot of my students are not comfortable turning fractions into decimals.  For students who want to avoid decimals, look below. With this problem I would have them convert 45 into a fraction by putting a one in as the denominator

Step One-change 45 into a fraction: -40 (1/2x45/1)

Step two: multiply the fractions within the (  )

                 -40 (45/2)

Step 3: Convert -40 into a fraction

               -40/1 (45/2)

Step 4: Simplify  fractions (2 goes into -40, -20 times)

               -20/1 (45/1)

Step 5: Multiply and a - times a + = a negative

             = -900
