They believe that it will help them lose weight. What do carbohydrates provide for active young people like Olivia?

Carbohydrates are basically our main energy source as humans. Although we can also get energy from proteins and fats, carbohydrates provide more efficient amount of energy among the rest of organic molecules. Young athletes like Olivia should take carbohydrates in order to sustain her energy in her sports activities. At her age, her body is in the development stage so she needs a balanced diet. Going into a high protein-low carbohydrate diet is not advisable at their age. That kind of diet can exhaust their organs at early age thus creating high risk for diseases. Also, her friends should not worry on their fats; they can burn them while they work out.
