The traits of a living being depend upon the complex mixture of interacting components inside it. Proteins do much of the chemical work inside cells, so they largely determine what those traits are. But those proteins owe their existence to the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), so that is where the hereditary trends are set.

The stretches of DNA responsible for a particular trait, say eye color, is copied as a similar messenger molecule called mRNA. The words in the mRNA are then deciphered correctly to produce the required proteins through a functional assembly of 20 amino acids.

Therefore, the correct option for the question: how does DNA determine a trait such as eye color is the second option, i.e. DNA codes for mRNA that determines eye color.
