Jimmy is "the one" in a variety of ways. The first would be that Jimmy demonstrates that he is one to break the mode of what can be and create what could or should be. As a youngster, Jimmy is shown to be one who breaks the rules. At the same time, Jimmy understands how to involve others and not isolate them. For example, when Jane is sick, Jimmy reads the paper and tells her that her favorite ball player is actually doing better than he is in order for her to feel better. It is here where I think that another element that demonstrates him to be "the one" can be seen. Jimmy is literate. Being able to read enables him to grasp the changes and conditions that are happening in the world around him. It is here where Jimmy is able to really exert his influence as "the one," trying his best to rally the old people around him into a force of change. Jimmy is also "the one" because he goes to college and does not use it as a shield to keep him from the community in which he was raised and the people he loves. He returns to tell them what people like Dr. King and Rosa Parks are doing in order to create change, invoking their names to the people of Samson in trying to cause them to see what can be as opposed to what is. In this light, Jimmy is "the one" as he is the individual among the people of Samson capable of leading them into what can be as opposed to what is.
