In this expression, the straight lines || mean "absolute value". The absolute value of a number is the distance from that number on the number line to 0. Thus, it is always positive.

To evaluate any expression containing absolute value, always calculate whatever is inside the absolute value lines first. In respect to the order of operations, absolute value is a grouping symbol, just like parenthesis.

Here, inside the absolute value lines is the expression -6 - 10 = -16.

-16 is the negative number, located 16 units to the left of 0 on the number line. The distance between -16 and 0 is 16 units.

|-16| = 16

|-6 - 10| = 16

2) 3 + 4(8(3.5 - 20) - 41)

This expression contains parenthesis within the parenthesis. According to the order of operations agreement, the inside parenthesis needs to be evaluated first:

3.5 - 20 = - 16.5

Now the outside parenthesis contain 8(-16.5) - 41

8(-16.5) =  -132

-132 - 41 = -173

The original expression now becomes 3 + 4(-173). Perform multiplication first, according to the order of operations:

4(-173) = -692

3 + (-692) = -689

3 + 4(8(3.5 - 20) - 41) = -689

Those lines around the problem are absolute value lines. This line indicates that when you get an answer, the result should be turned into a positive number. Why? Because absolute value means how far from zero a number is, and you can't be a negative away from zero.  -10 is 10 spaces away from 0 just like 10 is 10 spaces away from 0

first you solve the number inside:

-6 - 10 = -16

since it is  l-16l  the answer will be 16 because -16 is 16 spaces away from 0

2. 3 + 4(8 (3.5 - 20) - 41)

the first thing you do is take care of the parenthesis:

(8 (3.5 - 20) - 41)

distribute the 8 to 3.5 and -20, you will end up with:

((28 - 160) - 41)

now get rid of the parenthesis around 28 and -160

(28-160-41)

solve this:

-173

now look at the problem as a whole again:

2. 3 + 4(-173)

Distribute the 4 to -173

3 + (-692)

which is the same as:

3 - 692 = -689

3. 6 + (1/8) / (3/8)

Since we are dividing a fraction by a fraction we flip the reciprocal and multiply:

`1/8 xx 8/3 = 8/24 = 1/3`

6 + `1/3 ` = `6 ` `1/3`

or you can turn 1/3 into a decimal:

1/3 = .33

6 + .33 = 6.33

4. (13 - 5(3 - 7)^2 )

You use pemdas for a problem like this. Pemdas stands for Parentheses,Exponents,(Multiplication,Division),(Addition,Subtraction)

Exponent:

So with this question you are going to add the contents inside together since they are both negative. Sometimes it helps for people to see the question asked as -6 + (-10) so the answer will be -16 which is inside absolute value so |-16|= 16

Let's take this problem step by step using Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally which stands for: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction.

First we are going to subtract 3.5 from - 20 you will get -16.5

then you are going to multiply -16.5 by 8 which will give you -132

3 + 4(-132 - 41) You will then add the -132 and the -42

3 + 4(-173) Now multiply 4 by 173

3 + (-692) Now add subtract the -692 by the positive 3 and you'll get

-689

This is simple we are going to take the second fraction and flip that way you can multiply it.
