We have to solve a - 1/a = 5 for a.

a - 1/a = 5

=> a^2 - 1 = 5a

=> a^2 - 5a - 1 = 0

a1 = [5 + sqrt(25 + 4)]/2

=> 5/2 + (sqrt 29)/2

a2 = 5/2 - (sqrt 29)/2

The values of a are 5/2 + (sqrt 29)/2 and 5/2 - (sqrt 29)/2

a-1/a=5

multiply by a to get rid of the fraction:

`((a-1)/a) xx a = 5 xx a`

a - 1 = 5a

subtract a

-1 = 4a

divide by 4

-1/4 = 4a/4

  • -0.25 = a
