What are the hints in the play to Jerry's death in "Zoo Story"?

Would there be any proof in either the actual words of even the stage direction to say that jerry's death at the end wasn't unexpected?

There are many signs in "The Zoo Story" to signal that death will occur later in it. Whose death, however, is not always as clear. For example, when Peter prepares his pipe for smoking, Jerry asks him if he's not going to get cancer. Later, Jerry reassures Peter he won't be kidnapping his family. This signals the possibility of violence, and if one commits a violent crime, one might die for it. Jerry has empty picture frames. He says his mom, dad, and aunt are all dead. To be flip, that sounds like a trend, and why not put dead Jerry's picture in the empty frame? He tells a story about a black dog, one he links to the dog (Cerberus) who guarded the gates of the underworld. If he's seen such a dog…he's dead.
