The truth is this whole story takes place AT the zoo. The key sentence is when Jerry tells Peter that "youll see it on the news" hes refering to the fact that on the news that night there will be a story on how a man(Jerry)was killed at the zoo(by Peter of course)Therefor Jerry knew he was going to be killed, his goal was to get Peter to kill him and he was succesful. If you take note the story setting is a bench at Central Park. In new york...

Edward Albee's "The Zoo Story" is a darkly humorous examination of two people's existence. The entire drama is an interaction between a middle aged family man and a misplaced, lost, man who is trying to "get to the zoo" through an internal examination of his soul. Jerry is necessary to the play because it is Jerry who plays the Christ-like figure to Peter, who becomes an "apostle" of truth at the play's end.
Jerry is an everyman. He represents...

Jerry then produces a knife - the first time in the play that we've been aware he possesses one! He throws the knife to the ground, and, again, challenges Peter to fight for his bench, hitting him and slapping him until Peter, finally...

For some reason, which is not clear to me, often when life gets chaotic, it's compared to a zoo; how often have we heard "what a zoo!" in these situations. My experience of zoos is that they are places of order with all the animals in their cages and paths that take us along the way. Anyway, I think the zoo in this question is being used in the first sense, to stand for the chaos, class warfare and absurdity of life that Jerry...

As good as your answer is the play was only first performed in Berlin because in New York it was thought of as absurd and no one could understand any of Albee's hidden messages. Therefore it was passed around Europe from friend to friend until finally it was performed in Berlin. Your point of the unhappy view however is spot on in my view. Albee clearly wanted to show that even a rich middle classed man could be brought down to a barbaric man...

Although it's difficult to point to any one reason, it is clear that Jerry represents the alienated individual (a central theme in modern writing, especially existentialist writing) confronting the establishment figure in the person of Peter. Jerry is unstable; life has not been good to himas typified by the run down neighborhood that he lives in. Peter, while not rich, represents the well established middle class which would prefer to sit...

I'm not sure what your asking with the absurdity and reality prefix but in terms of The Zoo Story, the book is a representation of Peter's disassociation with reality (i.e. he lives in his perfect world, everything is routine, etc) however you'd be hard pressed to properly analyse that as I think it is a minor symbol. The knife is merely a plot point - a way for Jerry to allow Peter to reveal his primal nature.

Well, if we were going to assume that each playwright has a specific, unified vision, we could not find it in a single work. Instead, we'd look at the entire body of work, published and unpublished, and would look at unifying themes and techniques. That said, there may be reasons why the play was first produced in Germany. The vision it gives of America is an outsider's view, and not a happy one or unified one. Through the choice to have...

Judging by the lines on the final page or two of the play, Jerry hopes that Peter will live as an animal, not a vegetable. By that he means, living as a vegetable is to live a life of habit, being dead inside. Living a life as an animal means choosing one's life and fighting for what one has, as the two men fight over the bench in the play. (He also wants Peter to not get caught for killing him.)

There are many signs in "The Zoo Story" to signal that death will occur later in it. Whose death, however, is not always as clear. For example, when Peter prepares his pipe for smoking, Jerry asks him if he's not going to get cancer. Later, Jerry reassures Peter he won't be kidnapping his family. This signals the possibility of violence, and if one commits a violent crime, one might die for it. Jerry has empty picture frames. He says...

The most immediate reason the play is called "The Zoo Story" is that Jerry announces that he's been to the zoo when he first shows up. His story is a zoo story, and that starts a lot of the play's action in motion. There are other less obvious /more symbolic reasons as well. Jerry lost his parents; many animals in zoos (especially older zoos) are without full family structures, and Jerry fights for territory like an animal. The...
