"Whether Faith obeyed he knew not. Hardly had he spoken when he found himself amid calm night and solitude, listening to a roar of the wind which died heavily away through the forest. He staggered against the rock, and felt it chill and damp; while a hanging twig, that had been all on fire, besprinkled his cheek with the coldest dew."
He never is able to discover whether Faith resisted or not. The next day Brown returns to Salem. He sees all the people he had seen the night before and he cannot look at them. Not knowing whether his wife gave in to the devil or not haunts Brown for the rest of his life and he becomes a sad and distrustful man whose "dying hour was gloom."
