Hawthorne himself was born in Salem, coming from a Puritan background, and the author's guilt over his ancestors' participation in the witch hunts--one was a judge who presided over the trials--inspired this tale. Goodman Brown ventures forth from the town and travels into the nearby forest, where he encounters many different people over the course of the evening, including a "fellow-traveler" who is actually the devil incarnate. Brown returns to the village the next morning, unsure of what he has experienced in the forest and a changed man for the remainder of his life.
