    Nathaniel Hawthorne's allegorical short story "Young Goodman Brown" is set in Salem, Massachusetts, the location of the famed witch trials of the late 17th century. Hawthorne himself was born in Salem, coming from a Puritan background, and the author's guilt over his ancestors' participation in the witch hunts--one was a judge who presided over the trials--inspired this tale. Goodman Brown ventures forth from the town and travels into the nearby forest, where he encounters many different people over the course of the evening, including a "fellow-traveler" who is actually the devil incarnate. Brown returns to the village the next morning, unsure of what he has experienced in the forest and a changed man for the remainder of his life.
