Brown is no longer able to trust the goodness of people after his journey into the woods in "Young Goodman Brown". Since Brown is not sure whether his experience was real or imagined, he sees hypocrisy in all the members of his community. What he never realizes is that there is both good and evil in every person. No one is perfect. Since he cannot accept the lack of perfection in mankind, he loses his trust in all of mankind.
