Because of her constant confinement, she feels trapped and begins to see various patterns in the wallpaper. The major turning point in the story comes when she begins to see the figure of a woman who seems trapped in the wallpaper itself. The trapped figure represents the narrators mental and physical "confinement". Since the woman is left with no means of escape, she eventually goes insane.
