In the opening sequence of this story, we learn that it is set in a city during early part of the twentieth century. We learn that Alfred is a young man with troubles - he is a thief who can't hold down a job. We also learn that he has shame about this, which suggests there is a reason he is so unstable. The sets up the conflict - what will Alfred do now and what will Mr. Carr do?
