"The Yearling" has many strengths. One of them is how many of the characters relate to one another. This is a book full of affection and strong relationships. Another is the relationship between people and animals; their connections are strong. The descriptions of how intensely the characters need to work to survive on the land are good, and the descriptions of the land itself are solid. Finally, the language itself is vivid—both the dialogue and the narrative.
On the down side, some readers dislike the ending, and women are discussed in a pretty sexist fashion.
