What is the environment like off-campus? Do students venture off-campus frequently?

I've lived around Yale for a few years and I think it is getting better. I had friends that went to Yale in the 90s and they would not venture off campus too much, but it is getting safer to some degree. I would say that the immediate areas are safe, but I would not venture off too much further.

Proof of growing development is everywhere. They are building a lot more in the area and luxury condo have come in as well as a new cancer center and school for the arts. The future looks good for New Haven. Also I should mention that Gateway Community College is moving in a few blocks away. It is supposed to be the first Gold certified green-building in Connecticut. Things like this make the surrounding areas of Yale a better place.
