The Crosstown Shootout

The battle between Xavier and the University of Cincinnati has been going on since 1927, when Xavier, then an all-male institution, took on UC at the old Schmidt Field House and won, 29-25. The rest, as they say, is history. Every year, in the middle of basketball season, the entire town experiences a division of allegiance. The site of the Xavier–UC game, now known as the Skyline Chili Cross-town Shootout, rotates annually. Xavier has come out on top six out of the last ten times. Students have camped out all night and even have been known to skip a few classes until the tickets are distributed. The Shootout is broadcast annually on ESPN or ESPN2, and every bar in the city is packed with Cincinnati Bearcat and Muskie supporters alike, hoping for another victory in one of college basketball's most heated rivalries.

The Pig Roast

The annual Pig Roast is by far the best social event of the year for XU coeds. Not only does it commemorate the last week of classes for the year, but it also serves as an opportunity for everyone on campus to party one last time before summer. While no one is sure when the Pig Roast officially became its namesake, the idea of having a gigantic party at the end of the year is decades old. The event has become so big that the tenants of the house where it is held sell wristbands at 10 bucks a pop to get in, and they give out commemorative T-shirts as well. That way, when you wake up the next day and don't remember where you were, you can look at your shirt and say, “Oh!” It is a well-known fact that the Pig Roast is going to happen no matter what, so Cincinnati police officers show up to keep the peace and make sure no one gets hurt.
