War spread across Europe and Asia in the late 1930s. As the fighting continued in 1940 and 1941, Americans hoped the United States could somehow stay out of the conflict. However, on December 7, 1941, Japanese bombers attacked a U.S. military base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and in response the United States declared war on Japan. After this declaration, people on the home front had to make lifestyle changes and sacrifices so that all the nation's resources could be directed toward the war effort....
